The Worldwide Veterinary Services (WVS) is a brilliant charity with close links to our vet school. They provide essential veterinary aid around the world, including training local vets, providing veterinary supplies and running neutering and vaccination drives.
For us veterinary students they also have loads of projects dotted around the world that we can participate in, both pre-clinical and clinical from wildlife rescue in Costa Rica surgery courses in India and Thailand – great for practicing those all important surgical skills! Make sure to visit their website as they are constantly putting up new trips.
This is also a charity to keep in mind once graduated as they offer many once in a lifetime opportunities for qualified vets!
SURGICAL COURSES Surgical Training Courses - Based at the international training centres in Ooty (India), Goa (India) and Chiang Mai (Thailand). These are 12 day courses where you will gain invaluable practical skills in performing spay and neuter surgeries following theoretical lessons in the classroom. They are great to gain confidence in routine soft tissue surgery and you get full supervision from experienced vets. There are 10 people per course and you work in pairs for each surgery, with one person doing the surgery and the other monitoring anaesthesia. These are brilliant courses and Liverpool has their own reserved course usually in September (to consider for your 4th year summer?) AND they count as clinical EMS! PRE-CLINICAL PROJECTS Working Equine Health and Welfare Training Course in Ooty, India- This is an 8 day training programme including lectures, field practicals and community sessions on a variety of topics including local anesthetic blocks, castrations and working equine welfare. Course running in June, September, October and December 2018 (2019 dates tbc).
Vet Tech and Pre-Clinical Experience Courses in Goa, India –Based at the WVS Hicks International Training Centre set in a secluded and peaceful part of Goa, this is a unique opportunity to assist in treating inpatients, assisting the vet and helping prepare for surgeries. Siyafunda Endangered Species Project, South Africa. This project revolves around the amazing Big 5. Take part in vehicle-based monitoring as well as habitat work. The information collected is then used by the reserve management and anti-poaching teams, as well as national conservation efforts to help save these species. . Trip dates available throughout the year.
Siyafunda Conservation (Makalali project) , South Africa - Stay at the Twines Research camp and be involved in monitoring some of the key species; elephants, lions, hyenas and leopards as well as our breeding initiatives comprising buffalo, Livingston eland and nyala .The data collected is made available to students and researchers, as well as a number of national conservation projects including the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT). Trip dates available throughout the year. La Sansa Verde Animal Refuge, Bolivia – An exceptional opportunity to work closely with a variety of Bolivian Wildlife (Parrots, Bears, Turtles, Monkeys..!) often rescued from illegal trafficking which has drastically increased in Bolivia. Trip dates available throughout the year. Minimum volunteer period 1 month.
Esperanza Verde Wildlife Rescue Centre and Conservation Project, Peru – Based in the amazon jungle, Esperanza Verde rescue and rehabilitate animals that have been confiscated from the illegal wildlife trade. Trip dates available throughout the year. Minimum volunteer period 6 weeks.
