WHO ARE WE?

Picture
2019 LUVZS DAY
LUVZS is an extremely active student-run society within the Vet School with a unique independent focus to that of the Liverpool University Veterinary Society, offering exclusive exciting practical experiences with a diverse range of species to its members. We’re here to encourage those fascinated with working with exotic species and/or in conservation research, but we’re also here to support those who don’t feel as confident when faced with a snake or bird or other strange creature!

With a range of events hosted by our fantastic committee, we provide many opportunities for Liverpool Vets and Bio-Vets to learn about zoological and wildlife medicine first-hand, from our Trip Abroad to observe how veterinary medicine differs in other countries to the various talks we host from experts in their field right here at the University of Liverpool.

RECENT EVENTS
To give you an idea of our achievements over the past few years:
  • A talk from Dr William Fowlds, an exotics vet based in Africa, about his fascinating work with rhinos and other wild animals.
  • Exotics handling sessions with creatures ranging from bearded dragons to pythons to parrots and more.
  • Previous LUVZS Freshers Trips to Knowsley Safari Park, Chester Zoo, and Edinburgh Zoo to see the pandas.
  • Our successful annual LUVZS’ Days packed with numerous talks from specialists in the area and hands on experience with animals from fennec foxes to binturongs.
  • Amazing Trips Abroad to Copenhagen, Basel, Dublin, and Prague to see the zoos and to explore some fascinating European cities.

UPCOMING EVENTS
This year is going to be a bit different and strange, coming out of the COVID-19 outbreak, but we’re hoping things will soon be back on track and have lots of amazing events planned for you all. We’ll have to adapt, and deliver a lot of activities online, but we’re still here to help enrich your experience at Vet School and introduce you to the exciting world of veterinary zoological medicine.

The best way to keep up to date with all our events and activities is to join our Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/538120270204275/

Meet your LUVZS Committee!

President - Jonathan Mann

Year Group - 3rd

Why I Joined LUVZS: I'm really interested in exotic pets, especially rodents, fish, and invertebrates. I wanted the opportunity to help organise talks so people can learn more about these animals and be less worried about seeing them booked in for consults in the diary.

Committee Manager - Emily Sibley

Why I Joined LUVZS: Hey, my name's Emi and I'm a 4th year. I joined LUVZS as I've always loved keeping exotic pets (especially inverts!) and want to help provide opportunities for other students to keep learning about the many awesome exotics species we may encounter!

Treasurer - Rachel Dane

Why I Joined LUVZS: Hi there, my name is Rachel and I'm a fourth year. I joined the LUVZS committee to help raise awareness about the needs of exotic pets and to help organise talks to make us all feel more confident and prepared when dealing with these patients in practice in the future!

Leahurst Rep - Charlotte Smith

Year Group - 5th

Why I Joined LUVZS:Hiya, I’m Charlotte, a current final year! I wanted to get involved with LUVZS especially after intercalating in wildlife conservation as I wanted to help other like-minded students who may also wish to pursue this as a career, in gaining more exposure, opportunities, and confidence in this niche field of veterinary which unfortunately isn’t covered in as much depth in our curriculum as us exotic-lovers would wish!

The Expedition Project Ambassador – Orla Shipway

Year Group - 4th

Why I Joined LUVZS: I joined LUVZS because I enjoy learning about exotic species and I would love to work in conservation as a wildlife vet in the future.
