Liverpool Small Animal Veterinary Society

Welcome to LSAVS! We are a very active society focused on small animal health, welfare and medicine and put on lots of talks throughout the year about a variety of small animal topics. We also run a suturing practical in semester 2 using real cadaver material, which we love doing and have received great feedback about it in the past. We hope to see you at our events!

Since our launch in February 2017, we have hosted numerous fantastic events including:
  • The Yorkshire Vet Talk with Peter Wright
  • Suturing practical with our own lecturers, Dr. Rosie MacDiarmid and Alison Reed
  • “Obesity Communication” a talk by Professor Alex German
  • “How to Survive Vet School and Life Post Graduation” a talk by TV Vet, Judy Puddifoot
  • “Running a Small Animal Practice” a talk by TV Vet, Steve Leonard.
  • Ferret handling practicals with Dr. Bev Panto, a wildlife specialist
  • “Pedigree Dog Breeding- Where Ethics and Genetics Collide” a talk by Nick Blayney, Chairman of the Kennel Club
  • Interactive sessions with the Irish Wolfhound Charitable Trust and Greyhound Trust

Follow our Facebook (LSAVS- Liverpool Small Animal Veterinary Society) and Instagram (@liverpoolsavs) pages to keep up to date on the events we are running. If you are interested in becoming a member of LSAVS then please message our Facebook page or email our president Theo at hltkirk@liverpool.ac.uk. Membership will be £5 per year or £15 for all 5 years! The benefits of memberships include free or discounted entry to all events and priority over non-members for sold out events.

LSAVS Team- Stay in touch!

Keep updated with our Facebook page (LSAVS - Liverpool Small Animal Veterinary Society) or if you would like to contact any of the committee, here are their details below:

President - Theo Whitlock

Picture
Hi, I’m Theo, a second year vet student and the President of LSAVS this year! I’m very proud and excited to be President of this wonderful society and can’t wait to deliver lots of amazing talks and events for our members this year.
Throughout my life I’ve had the pleasure of looking after various species of pets- cats, dogs, rabbits, hamsters, and even a snake- so I am very passionate about small animal (and exotic) medicine.

Vice president - Max Marsden

Picture
Hi I’m Max! I’m currently intercalating in Marine Biology between my 3rd and 4th years and I’m Vice President of LSAVS, as well as a devoted lover of cats that don’t like to be photographed.
I’ve loved the LSAVS events since first year, and I joined the committee this year to make sure I get to stay involved with the amazing talks and other students, even in my non-vet year!

Secretary - Alice Coleman

Picture
Hi! I’m Alice, the secretary for LSAVS. I’m in my third year, and I am loving (almost) every minute of vet school!
I’m a first language Welsh speaker and grew up in North Wales- Liverpool has always been in my life, as we’ve taken a few of our animals to Leahurst in the past. For this reason, Liverpool was always my first choice (and I got lucky!).
I joined LSAVS in my first year, and over the last 2 years I have learnt so much just by attending a few talks. It has guided me towards my specific interests in veterinary, and for this reason I wanted to be a part of the committee to have an input on this year’s content, and of course broaden my own skillset!
I can’t wait to help organise the talks for this year and show the freshers what vet school is all about!

Leahurst Rep - Lydia Bradley

Picture
Hi, I’m Lydia, I’m a fourth year and I’m the LSAVS Leahurst Rep this year, having been President last year. I love all areas of small animal veterinary medicine, but I’m particularly interested in the management of chronic pain and soft tissue surgery

Treasurer - Simon Thomas

Picture
Hi! I’m Simon- the Treasurer for LSAVS 2022/23. I’m currently in my 2nd year having joined through the foundation pathway (Year 0).
I grew up in South Wales with a number of guinea pigs, rabbits and hamsters as pets- which is where my love of smallies began. Now I have a rescue tabby cat called Raymond who invariably is demanding attention any time we have an online class.
I’m really looking forward to continuing the great work LSAVS has done, and helping things to run as smoothly as possible!
