Previous Events

We are an extremely active society with the LUVS committee along with all of our subcommittees working hard throughout the year to put on fantastic events, talks and activities! Below is just some examples of what we get up to:

Summer Ball 2018

On the 2nd of June, we hosted our annual Summer Ball at Aintree Racecourse with an Alice in Wonderland theme. The evening consisted of a drinks reception, a three course meal and a dance floor with a DJ.  With wonderful views, entertainment and exclusive access to areas of the Aintree site including the winners enclosure, a fantastic night was had by all. A massive thanks to our 2018 Summer Ball Reps - Charlotte, Jenna and Maddie for making our biggest event of the year one to remember!
We wouldn’t be able to provide a night like this without the help of our Summer Ball Sponsors so thank you to you all!

Bright Leaf Recruitment - The Bright Leaf recruitment team has over 15 years’ experience in veterinary recruitment, helping match veterinary staff with employers quickly and efficiently. Our lengthy experience and specialist knowledge of the veterinary sector means we are the place to go for veterinary careers, such as veterinary surgeon vacancies and veterinary nurse jobs, veterinary commercial and insurance roles, locum positions and fixed term contracts.

Charity Netball Vs Rugby

On March 14th 2018, our annual 'Netball Vs Rugby' varsity took place. This involves the Rugby boys putting on their best Netball attire (some interesting choices!) and playing Netball against our Netball girls. The tables then turn when the Netball girls put on their best Rugby kit and give the boys a run for their money on the Rugby pitch! However, this year was even better as hockey and football also got involved! It was a great day, full of laughter and friendly competitiveness. Plus what topped it all off is that money was raised for our charities.
This year the netball girls came out on top! Let's see if they can keep up their reign in 2019...

Winter formal/informal 2018

This year's winter formal took place at the top of the Shankly hotel. This proved to be a knock-out venue with everyone appreciating the glamour of the evening. The night involved a drinks reception, 3 course meal, photobooth, rooftop garden and a dance floor with a DJ. The attendees of the winter formal were then joined by the winter informalers after they had finished their curries at Master Chef. Then everyone danced away the night with many carrying the night on into the clubs of Liverpool. Thanks to Hannah and Liv for organising such a fantastic event!

RAG week 2017

Every year we have a week organised by our Charity Rep to promote the amazing work our three chosen LUVS Charities and also to fundraise for them. This year we had an amazing week planned by Laura and our 17/18 LUVS Committee.

Monday 4th December – We had bake sales in both the TY (Liverpool) and Leahurst Common Room – Thanks to everyone who did their bit and made some cakes for us to sell – they all looked and tasted incredible!

Tuesday 5th December – Blackwell’s kindly hosted us for a chilled out BYOB pub quiz. Cakes were eaten, mince pies sold and a wide variety of Christmas and non-Christmas questions answered. This event was a first for our RAG Week and an event that we will definitely be putting on again!

Wednesday 6th December - Leg waxing took place in the TY – always a favourite of RAG Week, taking a few hairs from students and staff alike.

Thursday 7th December - Christmas Jumper Day – This was a chance for our students to dust off their Christmas Jumpers and wear their “fashionable” jumpers with pride. It’s a really easy and effective way to support our charities and got us all into the festive spirits!

Friday 8th December – Speaking of spirits, albeit a different kind… We concluded RAG Week with our annual LUVS Christmas Party. The night was a great success which saw everyone partying in true vet style into the early hours of the morning!

Trusty Paws 3 peak challenge

Nearly 100 vet students from across the 5 years, took to Yorkshire to endure a gruelling 25 mile walk over the three peaks within the 12 hour limit! Congratulations to everyone involved in the organising and fundraising of this great event, which raised a staggering £6305 for the Trusty Paws clinic, which is due to open its first clinic in the coming months.

Vet Freshers Week 2017

  • Meet the Buddy: A very successful start to fresher week. 200+ Liverpool vet students descended on Revs to be paired with their assigned 'buddy'. Freshers, 3rd and 4th years sent in applications to be carefully matched up by our secretary; Maisie Gardener.
  • Boozy Bingo (NEW): Organised by our amazing social secs; Hannah Green and Olivia Mawson, Boozy Bingo was a huge success! Having reached capacity, Hannah and Liv then had the job of running the game of Bingo! They were real entertainers and everyone that attended had a great time. All false calls were given hilarious penalties, embraced especially well by our first false caller; Rob Noble. Multiple bingo calls lead to dance off competitions and silly games. All of this incorporated with spontaneous dancing lead to a truly great evening. Thank you Hannah and Liv!
  • Bar Crawl: Another successful bar crawl, lead by our social secs and Liverpool Vice President, Rob Noble. We started at the Font on campus, then headed to Pilgrim, Revs, Woodys, Mcoolys and finally Bar Bars. It was well attended by all years with a bus full also coming over from Leahurst.
  • Liverpool City Challenge: Unfortunatly, the horrible weather got the better of Wednesday night, leading to the event being cancelled. At least this allowed freshers to prepare themselves for Buddy meal.
  • Buddy Meal: 3rd year and 4th years prepared their houses for their new 1st year buddies to arrive. A variety of themes were seen over the meals and numerous laughs were had throughout the night. Thank you to both the Liverpool and Leahurst houses that volunteered to hold the afterparties.
  • Welcome Party: The first Leahurst party of the year was held on Saturday, with an 'At Sea' theme! 1st years came as sea trash, 2nd as starfish, 3rd as clown fish, 4th as sharks, 5th as pirates and committee came as mermaids. As always, amazing effort was made on the fancy dress!! The Leahurst Bar reps also did a tremendous job on the decorations and running the bar all night. The party has been called the best Leahurst party yet so congratulations to everyone who was involved in the organising (and the 5 hour clean the next day)! BRING ON CHRISTMAS PARTY!!

FAVS Congress

FAVS were thrilled to be hosting the annual congress at Leahurst!! We had 165 students attend, all united by a common interest in Farm veterinary medicine. The weekend consisted of lectures and practicals with some of the most renowned experts in the UK. It wasn't all academic though as on the Saturday evening, the FAVS ball will took place at Thornton manor. Another fantastic opportunity for us to show off the Liverpool vet school with the incredibly hard-working FAVS committee did us all proud!

Winter Formal and Informal

Undoubtedly one of the most anticipated nights of the year, the Winter Formal and Winter informal did not disappoint. The wonderful social secs, Meg and Scott scored again with the Winter formal held at the beautiful Panam at Albert Docks and the Winter informal hosted by a brand spanking new venue, the Passage to India. After their curry, the dapper gentleman met up with our beautiful ladies in Panam to finish the night in true style- a rare but welcomed occasion for us vets to finally don the glad rags and look glamorous for a change and boy do Liverpool vets scrub up well!

Lord Trees Bar events: LEVS Race night and Bonfire night!

Well, the wonderful LUVS Lord Trees Bar reps have literally been on fire with 2 big events headlining in the Lord Trees Bar in the last 2 weeks.
The first was Race night- run by LEVS (Liverpool Equine Vet Society) to bring Aintree to Leahurst. It was very competitive affair with students roaring on their horses to the finish line. The night culminated with a charity race, won by Lucie McKenzie (the most fortunate unlucky person you'll ever meet) who won £30 to spend on the LUVS bar.
The second event was an early celebration of Bonfire night! Mulled cider, toffee apples and marshmallows were on the agenda with a spectacularly large fire to keep us all warm. A great night for students, lecturers and clinicians alike. Look out for future Lord Trees Bar events coming soon!

Welcome Week 2016

Well, it's safe to say the academic year of 2016 went off with a bang in Freshers week! We started off with Meet the Buddy at Revolutions Bar, St Peters Square (our lovely sponsors) where the prophets met the disciples. The older year buddies couldn't have been better matched to their little freshlings courtesy of this years fabulous secretary, Bethan Warner. Having all palled up over a good few shots of tequila in Cava it was on to the next night- The Ceilidh. Imogen Frame, the Liverpool VP was the lady to thank for finding us our new band for the year- the fantastic (and rather gorgeous) Scottish Ceilidh band had us all utterly swept off our feet by the end of the night.
Then came Tuesday- the infamous freshers week Bar Crawl. Vets never miss the opportunity to show off all their extra-curricular talents, singing being one of them (or not) in the infamous Woody's karaoke bar. It was another raging success for our 2nd year dream team, Scott and Meg- the new LUVS social secs.
And then the Treasure Challenge, hosted by the devilishly handsome Leahurst VP Harry Harwood. From standing on ship anchors to shaving each others heads, the teams fought furiously to win the greatest number of points to secure them the ultimate title of Treasure challenge champions. The videos of that night will live on forever!
Thursday- the much awaited glamorous (?) Buddy Meal with 3 course dinners and a clink of port glasses to get our freshers appropriately educated about the grand finesse of Vet School. Then finally the week ended with.... THE RETURN OF LEAHURST PARTIES!!! (These infamous parties got banned after one too many dangerous escapades involving broken bones, and after much begging and pleading by us, we won the battle!). With a medieval theme, 2 booming bars with fat frogs sold out in 30 minutes, a mighty DJ and a 500 person marquee, it was nothing short of an absolute blinder of a party. A great way to welcome in our brilliant freshers who just happen to be the gamest bunch the vet school has seen in a while. Welcome Freshers of 2016!

LUVS Summer Ball 2016

Picture
Well what a finale to end yet another fantastic year across the vet school. The summer ball is always the most awaited event of the LUVS social calendar and this year certainly didn't disappoint. Set in the beautiful grand hall of St.George's in the heart of Liverpool city centre we celebrated the end of our wonderful 5th years reign along with all that LUVS has achieved thus far. The evening was organised by the brilliant Summer ball committee; Emma Reilly, Jordan Hall, Jamie Duquemin-Sheil and Amy Osborne who gave us all a wonderful night to remember and truly cracking send off for our 5th year graduates. We wish them all the very best of luck and success in all their future endeavours- we will miss you!

LUVS Full Moon Party

We returned to Camp and Furnace for The Full Moon Party at the end of April, this was the last LUVS party of the year! This event saw us cladded in fluorescent clothes and armed with glow sticks for a night to remember. Having used Camp and Furnace as the venue of our Welcome Party back in October, it was great to be back there for another great event! It was also a nice opportunity for our pre-clin students to let their hair down before revision for summer exams gets into full swing.

RAG Week!

Picture
8th-14th February marked the return of RAG week - a whole week dedicated to raising money for our 3 LUVS charities. Different events took place over the course of the week including a onsie day, Liverpool and Leahurst bake-offs, a dodgeball tournament, and as with most LUVS activities, Vet Revue! Thank you all for getting involved, and to Bethan Warner, our Charity Rep for putting on such a fantastic week of events!

AVS Bristol

The weekend of November 6th- 8th marked AVS Sports Weekend in Bristol! This weekend saw students from each of the UK's 8 vet schools compete in a range of sports and allowed our students to experience a new city! This is always a fantastic and hotly anticipated event, and this year certainly didn't disappoint in being one of the best weekends of the year! With a bar crawl, ceilidh and a range of rugby, football, netball and hockey matches it was certainly a jam packed weekend! Thank you Bristol!

Staff Student Bonfire Night

Picture
This was a top event for staff and students alike, with toasted marshmallows and toffee apples to match the bonfire. Big thank you to our bar reps for making it such a successful evening!

UVLAA Alumni Day

On Saturday 17th October, LUVS, in association with the UVLAA held the first Alumni Day of the year, entitled 'Life as a Vet: What are the Options?'. The day provided an insight into internships, a career as a locum and much more, which will hopefully guide our students on where they would like their career to take them!

Vet Freshers Week 2015

This was a great week, dedicated to welcoming our new first year veterinary and bioveterinary students to LUVS over six events! Highlights from the week included a treasure hunt across Liverpool (with a multitude of challenges), a bar crawl introducing all of our favourite hang outs to the freshers, and Welcome Party, which this year was held at Camp and Furnace. Camp and Furnace turned into an Arabian Night with genies, magic lamps and much more!
